Xamarin Platform Suggestions

Announcement: This forum has been migrated to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community. To learn more about the migration to Visual Studio Developer Community please check out the release blog post.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of the Xamarin Platform, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Xamarin Platform Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Allow installing older versions of Xamarin in Visual Studio 2017

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351889/allow-installing-older-versions-of-xamarin-in-visu.html
This is needed in case of buggy Xamarin releases that happen quite often, sadly. There's no way to go back and install the previous version without downgrading entire VS2017. The way it was in VS2015 was really convenient.

  2. Blend for Xamarin

Visual Studio integration is a great way to improve cross-platform development productivity using one of the best IDE.

The goal is to imitate the tools (and their usage) on current Windows development (WPF / Windows 8 / Windows Phone).

We have 2 independant tools working together to provide the best productivity management ever : Visual Studio and Blend for the design.

What about Blend Integration with Xamarin ?

  6. Add build configuration transform plist files

I would like to see info.plist.Debug which would sit nested under the info.plist file and contain XDT transformations to apply. This would effectively be the same as app/web.config.Debug. Note that the .Debug suffix can be any build configuration. You should be able to right-click the info.plist and select ‘Add build configuration transform’ or similar. I would guess that 9 out of 10 developers probably only want to change the bundle identifier.

  7. Make Android Archive path configurable

Upon right-clicking on an Android project, in Visual Studio, and selecting "Archive", the new archive is stored in the %LOCALAPPDATA% folder.

A way to customize the path, like we do with the Android SDK path, would be amazing.

    Thank you,
    Lucian

  8. Retain Mac location after failed Pair to Mac login

Every time a login is failed in Pair to Mac>Add a Mac, I have to enter the Mac IP address again. If the IP address is remembered, it would be awesome.

  9. Remoted iOS Simulator Copy&Paste + Arrow keys cursor movement.

Please, add next features to the Remoted iOS Simulator:
    - syncronize windows and osx clipboard to allow Copy&Paste actions in the Remoted iOS Simulator window, probably using the native iOS dialog (https://bdfss.blob.core.windows.net/shots/2017-12-07_00-51-08-7506bac1-bbd2-4bb3-9f81-ad9f9d15874b.png),
    - allow cursor navigation in text fields using keyboard arrow keys.
Both these features are work in the default OSx iOS Simulator. Thank you!

  10. Support for Properties windows (Ctrl-W,P) and Toolbox, for Xamarin Forms

When editing a Xamarin Forms, the Properties windows is blank when a control is selected in the XAML code. For all other flavors of XAML, the properties windows show all available properties and is a great productivity boost.
Also, the Toolbox (Ctrl-W,X) does not show any of the standard or added UI controls that are installed for VS. I am using VS2017 15.5.6

  11. Make Desginers better

I am a c# developer and I want to use Xamarin, but the designer is making me and everybody frustrated. For Android for isstance, I cannot see XML and Designer side by side. Zooming in both iOS and Android designers is a real pain. Mouse wheel should be used for zooming as standard not by clicking. Believe me these details are so simple but extremely important. These details let developer skip away from C# to Android and Swift, just because of these small things.

  13. Add support to build Mac OS binaries from windows

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351886/add-support-to-build-mac-os-binaries-from-windows.html
Currently we need to log-in to a real Mac, update or SVN workspace and then fire a build using Xamarin.

It would be very convenient and safe a lot of time to be able to build from a PC using a Mac Agent. It would also make build automation much easier since we can build the target nuget package immediately after msbuild.

Last year on Xamarin Evolve you presented iOS usb remoting - https://blog.xamarin.com/live-from-evolve-new-xamarin-previews/

Since then nothing changed, we still not have an access to this feature but we really need one!

  18. When I create Xamarin.Form project, please show an option "Portable Class Library" in the section "Code Sharing Strategy".

In any kinds of project, it is still used "Portable Class Library", especially in updating or upgrading the old project.
So, in the new version of xamarin.form, the section "Code Sharing Strategy" is still the option about "Portable Class Library".

  19. iOS remote simulator on Android device plugged into Windows machine

I don't know if there are any possibilities to make this happen.

Currently we can display the iOS simulator screen on Windows machine. But what if we can try our iOS apps on a device that feels more like the actual iPhone. With touch screen and gestures.

Maybe through streaming the screen to Android device. And streaming back the inputs from the device. I don't know how the current Remote Simulator works.

    It's only an idea.

  20. XAML for Xamarin Forms to be consistent with WPF/UWP XAML so that we have one XAML standard

When Xamarin started Xamarin Forms, I am sure they didn't want to confuse Xaml developers with similar syntax they use in WPF/Silverlight/UWP and started renaming controls like TextBox in WPF/Silverlight/UWP to Entry in Xamarin Forms.

Now that Xamarin is part of Microsoft, we should stick to one standard XAML so that, we can use XAML designers like Blend or similar tools, to drag drop controls, attach behaviours and triggers visually.

Ideally, we design UWP app, and we get iOS and Android apps with no code change.
