I suggest you ...

Option to open AXML files directly in code view by default.

In Visual Studio, I use keyboard shortcuts for everything. When I switch to the solution explorer and choose an axml file, I'd like to be able to have code view be the default state.

I've found that there's lag in opening the designer, and as a developer, I'd personally like to be able to do all of my work in code view.

Can we have an option to open directly in code view within Visual Studio?

VS 2015 has options Open Code/Open designer on right click in the solution explorer and they work, but sometimes it doesn't show.

I think it would be good enough to simply have the "Set Default" for the "Open With" context menu item on the file for this. This would be a broader feature, and according to link Chase provided (http://forums.xamarin.com/discussion/comment/38084#Comment_38084) this functionality used to exist. It doesn't anymore. When I right-click on an axml file, I get no option to set a default (as far as I can tell).

This would be great. I create my layouts directly in AXML code most of the time.

I also use the keyboard extensively, and just a simple keyboard shortcut to switch between the two views would be good enough. Something like F7/Shift+F7 back when working with Silverlight in VS (some of them would use just F7 to toggle).

The AXML editor should have an option to open in code view first. When working on UI 99% time spend is on source view.

Something like XAML editor has. Please look at editor settings XAML -> Miscellaneous and Default View "Always open documents in full XAML view"
